Jane at Neighbours Day

On the 29th of May 2010, Halifax celebrated Neighbours Day and Phoenix FM hosted the event. Jane Danson was a VIP guest at this event. Flo and Ellen got a chance to meet the star and interview her.

Jane Danson is famous for playing the role of Leanne Battersby in Coronation Street. The Battersby family were dubbed the "Neighbours From Hell" and made an immediate impact on the long-running show's audience. Jane also played a nurse in the drama series A&E and also played Gemma Osbourne in the ITV police drama The Bill in 2002.

LESTER NOEL

Lester Noel came into the studio to talk to Howard Priestley on the 22nd of April 2010 on Soul City.

Howard's special guest Lester Noel, formerly of Beats International who had a number one hit with "Dub Be Good To Me" in 1990. Lester is now teaching at Ravenscliffe High School here in Halifax, aswell as running an under 16's football team in Todmorden.

ROSS ADAMS

Actor and voice over artist Ross Adams (star of the BBC3 Comedy series The Gemma Factor) came into the studio on the 17th of April 2010 to talk to Dean Wilkinson on the Saturday Breakfast Show.

Ross Adams came into talk about his role on the Gemma factor, plus his past jobs including the voicing of the Kelloggs Frosties advert - "They're Gonna Taste Great". Ross also tells of his plans for future projects.

JEREMY PRITCHARD from EVERYTHING EVERYTHING

Jeremy Pritchard, bassist and vocalist from indie band Everything Everything, spoke to Wayne Illingeworth on the Lunchtime Live on the 15th of April 2010.

Jeremy spoke to Wayne about being in a band that is on the rise on the Manchester music scene, the recording of their debut album (Man alive, released on August the 30th through the Polydor record label) and more.

JON GOMM

Jon Gomm came into the studio on the 21st of March 2010 to talk to Nick, Shaun, Mickey and Michelle (Y.M.C.) on the YUBS show.

Jon Gomm is a well established artist throughout the Yorkshire music scene, and can easily fill any venue he plays with an ever increasing fan base. With an eccentric style of playing the guitar, using the different parts almost as different instruments.

He came in to the studio to talk about himself and his unique style, promoting upcoming gigs and his album Don't Panic and chose some songs including some from the unsigned Matt Bentley.

JOE BROWN

Joe Brown talked to Flo during the Tea for Two show on Monday the 25th of January 2010

Joe Brown was one of the original Rock & Roll Stars to come out of the UK. One of the first UK session men, his early career highlights include playing guitar with Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash and other US stars when they came over to Europe.

Joe went on to top the charts with his own records, had The Beatles open shows for him and in a career packed with musical highlights has also presented several National series of the Joe Brown Show on UK TV, two series Rock Show for BBC Radio 2 and finds time to do around 100 live shows a year in the UK.

SCOTT OLGARD

Scott came in to see Gez & Elaine

Scott Olgard came in on the 23rd of September 2009 to talk to Gez and Elaine about his new CD and upcoming tour, and play some acoustic tracks.

Scott's debut CD "Collections" was released a couple of years ago with a self-proclaimed "teen-sound" Scott wrote, played, recorded and produced the CD himself, using a variety of string instruments. Scott then toured the country promoting "Collections".

His newest outing has a more matured folky sound, incorporating even more instuments. Still writing, performing, recording and producing all of his own tracks, the newest CD (yet to be titled) and tour is on track to be even more successful.

Sabrina came in to A Little Bit Of Ireland to talk to Richard O'Brien, and play some acoustic tracks on Monday the 31st of August 2009.

Born in Cobh in County Cork, Ireland, Sabrina plays the bodhran & the guitar. Sabrina's music defies description, but she puts up with the tag folktronica "because it makes me laugh." Taking her rich traditional music background and mixing it seamlessly with an eclectic range of influences from Bjork to Kristen Hersh, Tricky and Kate Rusby, her songs are full of space and fresh air.

Trevor Dawson meets Melvin Benn

Trevor Dawson caught up with Festival Republic director Melvin Benn whilst at the Leeds Festival Media Day, at Bramham Park, in Leeds on the 30th July 2009.

Melvin Benn is well known for setting up the huge, dual Festivals of Reading and Leeds, as well as having a major part to play in organising Glastonbury Festival too.

At the Press Conference, Melvin spoke about this year's Leeds Festival and also a local representative of the community of the nearby village of Thorner announced what the festival has done to help them improve the villages amenities - including a boules area, and a new church roof.

MELVIN BURGESS - Author


Melvin beside Gez and Elaine
In 1996 Melvin Burgess' novel "Junk" stood out head and shoulders above work being produced by other authors working in the genre of young adult fiction. Eight years later "Doing It" brought more controversy with a frank account of under-age sex.

Both books were bestsellers as a new generation read open and honest stories about young people that most 'adults' choose to ignore as being a reality to many. On Wednesday the 1st of July 2009 Melvin, who has been living here in Calderdale for the last 18 months, came to Phoenix FM to talk to Gez and Elaine.

Actor Dominic Brunt better known as Paddy Kirk the vet, from ITV soap - Emmerdale - popped into the studios on Fri 6th Februrary '09's Lunchtime Live with Kelly Harris and Lady PJ.

Dominic talked about Emmerdale, his earlier careers, family and also an upcoming charity event in Leeds.

The charity event on 26th April '09, is a 12-hour-long zombie-film festival raising money for animal charity WSPA. It is being held at Cottage Road Cinema, in Headingley, Leeds.

Nick 'Peanut' Baines and Nick Phelps

Nick 'Peanut' Baines, keyboard player with indie band The Kaiser Chiefs, paid a visit to Phoenix on Monday the 12th of January 2009 and sat in on Drivetime, chatting to presenter Nick Phelps.

The two of them discussed the history and influences of the Kaiser Chiefs as well as current plans and future developments for the group. Local bands had their tracks played during the hour and Peanut was able to talk about the West Yorkshire scene, as well as giving some fascinating insight into the British music scene in general.

The band featured on several shows over Christmas including performing Never Miss A Beat with Girls Aloud on their TV special and playing the same song on the Christmas Day edition of Top Of The Pops.

8th September 2008 saw a gathering at the Town Hall in celebration of Calderdale's falling crime rate.

Since 2004 there have been 4,500 fewer victims of crime in the borough than there would have been had crime continued at 2004 levels. You can listen to Superintendent Alan Lord's speech .

SONGS FOR DESPERATE DOGS

Jonathan Taylor performs, live in the studio, two track from his CD 'Debut - the collection'. It's a compilation put together from tracks on previous releases, and is being sold to raise money for BSAPP, a dog sanctuary in Bulgaria, where Jonathan has a studio.
The sanctuary desperately needs new premises, as the current neighbours consider it a nuisance and have killed three dogs and vandalised the power supply. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of 'Debut' will go to the appeal fund.

Interviewed between the songs, Jonathan tells how he became involved with the cause and talks about his music and his hopes of bringing together British and Bulgarian musicians.

THE TOWN FROM HELL‏

Andrew Shaw from Calderdale Television tells Sara Hinchliffe about their recent project to uncover some of the history of Halifax in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the making of a DVD about it .

UKRAINIAN VOICES

Halifax's Ukrainian community arrived in the late 1940s as refugees, former prisoners of war and displaced persons. Horrified by the Russians' efforts to extinguish their national culture at home, they made great efforts to preserve it in exile through organising educational, social and religious activities. This programme features the sound of their church choir, and two exerpts from interviews with local man Mr Wolodymyr Kurylak, all recorded during Age Concern Calderdale's 2006 Voices From The Past project.
