British Urban Film Festival

Halifax to honour actress

Angela Griffin at 2023 BUFF Awards

The 2023 BUFF awards ceremony is to take place in Halifax for the first time.

The ceremony, the climax to this year’s British Urban Film Festival, will be held on 20 October at Crossley Gallery in Dean Clough, the 22-acre mixed use mill complex.

The announcement of Angela Griffin as this year’s honorary recipient was made at BUFF media day in Hyde Park Picturehouse, one of the UK’s oldest cinemas which recently underwent a revamp after receiving a £2.3m National Lottery Heritage Fund grant along with support from Leeds City Council and the Garfield Weston Foundation.

In a brief statement, the Waterloo Road actress, who first joined Coronation Street in 1992, said “Thank you for the invitation to pick up the award! What an honour.”

Waterloo Road is in the top three most-watched titles of the year so far on BBC iPlayer for 16-34 year olds, alongside Happy Valley which is filmed in Halifax.

BUFF founder Emmanuel Anyiam-Osigwe, said hosting the awards in Halifax was indicative of the festival’s knack for “setting trends in diversity and representation”.
